United States Speaker of the House 2023

The position of Speaker of the United States House of Representatives is currently vacant as of October 18, 2023. The previous speaker, Kevin McCarthy, was removed from the position on October 3, 2023, after a further split in the Republican caucus, with eight House Freedom Caucus members joining with the Democratic Party minority to oust McCarthy. This was the first time in the history of the House of Representatives in which the Speaker of the House was successfully removed.

Who could be the next speaker of the house?

The House is expected to hold a Speaker election to replace Kevin McCarthy on October 17, 2023. The Republican nominee for speaker is Jim Jordan, who won the majority of the votes in a House Republican Conference vote on October 13, 2023. The Democratic nominee for speaker is Hakeem Jeffries.

It is unclear who will be elected Speaker of the House. The Republicans have a narrow majority in the House, but there is a significant split within the Republican caucus. It is possible that the Republicans will not be able to unite behind a single candidate, which could allow the Democrats to elect Hakeem Jeffries as Speaker of the House.
